Kuma Biodiesel Stoves!
|
Let me know if you'd like me to do a workshop in your area. Just need a venue, and some interested folks!

Here are descriptions of the three types of classes I usually do. See my homepage for schedule- note that the listings may have slightly different titles or descriptions, but they are either:
BIODIESEL BASICS (or 101): An introductory class that is a condensed version of the longer classes described below. Oriented more towards folks who want more information about biodiesel, whether you're thinking of buying or making it. Some hands-on work, but not as much as in the homebrew workshops.
BIODIESEL HOMEBREW WORKSHOP: This class will be serve as both an introduction to biodiesel and a hands-on experience for those interested in learning how to make biodiesel from used restaurant oil. You will learn the chemistry and tricks of making quality biodiesel by making small batches and experimenting with different veg oils, catalysts, and pH indicators. We will also cover washing, quality control, methanol recovery, sources of supplies and equipment, and reactor design, with an emphasis on the "Appleseed" reactor made from an electric water heater. We will operate a small Appleseed reactor during class. Other topics to be covered will include: processor design, automated processors, chemistry, quality control, vehicle compatibility, cold weather issues, status of the industry, disposal of wastes, legal issues and how to organize a biodiesel coop. Whether you just want to learn more so you can decide whether or not to use biodiesel, or you want to make your own brew, this class will help you get underway.
PROCESSOR BUILD WORKSHOP: This class is for people who want to go home at the end of the day with a processor. You bring a water heater (recommend 50 or 80 gal), and order a the plumbing kit from b100supply.com to create a processor that looks like this. (I will have a 12 gal "mini"-Appleseed processor on display). Register for the class first, then upon your request, I will give you a coupon code to give you a $50 discount (beyond what is offered on b100's website) . I recommend either buying a new water heater (Lowe's has 50 g for about $230) or a used one in good condition- they are quite common and often cheap on craigs list. If you can not find a water heater by then, or can't transport one, you can assemble the piping and valves and attach this to the water heater later.
I ask that people order the b100supply kit in order to make assembly easier do deal with in the workshop, but if you want to get your own parts individually, you can. You will need to purchase the kit from b100supply at least 2 weeks before the class (so by June 10) in order to get the $50 discount. To register, go back to my homepage and click on the PayPal button, or send a check to: BioLyle, PO Box 18924, Seattle, WA 98118. Location will be a shop in the Ballard neighborhood- to be given to folks after registering. Class will be limited to first 20 who register, but repeated if there is sufficient demand.
