Here is my methanol recovery set-up. An auxilary heater core condenses the methanol vapors produced by heating up the glycerin in another water heater. This basic design comes from the book Biodiesel Basics and Beyond by Bill Kemp. I am able to recover about 20 - 25% of the methanol from the glycerin, so from a 40 gal batch of glycerin, I recover about 9 or 10 gal. I recommend using the extra low density water heater elements because they don't burn out. Here's the link from Plumbingsupply.com, where I got mine, but you might be able to find them locally. You'll have to heat the glycerin to over 150 deg F and keep it heating to continue boiling off the methanol. So you will want to bypass the theromostat, and wire directly to the water heater's heating element. [You can cut away the plastic stop so you can increase the temp beyond 150 deg F]. After the temp has risen to about 170 deg, I plug the heating elelement into this simple variac, and reduce the power to about half. That should be enough to keep the temp at around 170, so you minimize water contamination. I also use a watt-meter to make sure it is continuing to heat. Remember, you need to disable the upper element, just like for the biodiesel processor.

The glycerin can be loaded by pouring it in throught a funnel on top or simply feeding it in from the processor as shown below (as the weight of the biodiesel over it will push it over to the methanol recovery water heater).

Here are some close-ups of the auxilary heater, which I bought on ebay, but you can order them from NW Air Conditioning: 206-242-6034. The unit is made by the Red Dot Company in Tukwila, WA and it is unit R-254-0.

So doing methanol recovery is a great idea! If you haven't got that set up yet, you could probably dilute the glycerin (if made with KOH) with water (1 part glycerin to at least 3 parts water) and put it in the toilet. This dilution should be sufficient to raise the flashpoint over 140 deg F. See the infopop forum's section on methanol recovery to get that going!
